Get the facts about why mineral paints are best for brick and masonry
Masonry is breathable—Mineral Finishes are the Perfect Match
Mineral finishes are more breathable than your home’s masonry and always allow moisture vapor to freely escape without damage to masonry or the paint. Ordinary paints trap vapor and can blister and peel.
Masonry is Matte Flat—Mineral and Lime Paints Look the Best
Minerals in nature are matte flat, unless polished. Mineral- and lime-based paints are matte, flat, and microporous. They never look “painted on” and do not change the texture of masonry.
Masonry is porous—Mineral Paints Penetrate and Permanently Fuse
Mineral paints and Limewash penetrate deeply into masonry and become a permanent part of your home’s masonry. Ordinary paints form a plastic-like layer on the surface only.
Masonry Colors are Permanent—Mineral Pigments do not Fade
Keim mineral colors are permanent, like nature’s geologic colors. Both the paint finish and colors are unaffected by UV, no matter how harsh.

From a better paint company.
Your masonry home deserves mineral paint.
Choosing the right finish for your brick house can dramatically influence its aesthetic and longevity. Let’s break down the two popular options: mineral paint and limewash.
Choose Mineral Masonry Paint
Mineral Paint for solid color, waterproof protection, longest life, the lowest maintenance.
Composition
– Liquid potassium silicate (water-glass) and silica sol binder for a quartz-like finish, earthen oxide pigments, and less than 5% organic additives and water
– Penetrates and fuses on a molecular level with masonry for permanent bonds
– Mineral paint allows your brick to breathe, and will never blister or peel from moisture, no matter the climate
Application
– Apply by brush, roller, or airless spray, typically in two coats for full, pin hole free coverage
– First coat may be thinned, up to 10%, with Silicate Dilution in hot weather and for airless spray application
– Can be applied to well-bonded previous paint, without the need for primer
Appearance
– A solid, opaque finish that completely covers the brick with a beautiful matte flat finish
– No plasticizer ensures a natural, never “painted-on” appearance—maintains the feel of brick texture
– Available in a full spectrum of colors that are completely UV-resistant and will not fade, regardless of the climate
– Micro-porous, quartz finish radiates UV, masonry surfaces remain cooler in high-heat environs
Durability
– The most durable paint for masonry requiring the least amount of maintenance
– Tone-like finish is immune to acid rain, pollution, or the harshest climates
– Perfect for coastal, high-humidity climates, deserts, and everywhere in between
Choose European Limewash
Limewash for chalky, old-world aesthetic and a variety of different artistic finishes.
Composition
– Made only from slaked lime, sourced in the Italian Alps, water, and natural earth oxide pigments
– Penetrates and carbonizes onto all types of bare masonry
– Vapor permeable so masonry surfaces breathe—will never blister or peel from moisture
Application
– Applied by brush, roller, or airless spray, and typically partially removed or distressed to reveal the underlying brick texture and color
– May be thinned with water and applied as a translucent color or “whitewash”
– May be installed in multiple coats, with minimal thinning, for a solid-color finish
– Combine with Romanit Slurry to form a thick paste that minimizes mortar joints.
– Cannot be applied to previous latex/acrylic paints without use of Mineral Primer
Appearance
– Chalky, matte finish for a soft, aged, and timeless appearance
– Accelerated aging for a graceful, worn look in just a few years
– Available in a full spectrum of colors, but white and light tones are most popular
Durability
– Soft finishes tend to age more quickly and often require more frequent maintenance than mineral paint, especially in varying climate conditions. Investing in mineral paint can provide greater durability and reduce the need for regular upkeep.
– The finish can be damaged by acid rain and stained by pollution and biological growth in harsh climates
